Our advice for successful planting

     I.      Preparation of the planting area

 1.      Preparation of the planting area must done in the summer or at the latest in the winter before planting, to let the rain and frost break up the soil making it friable, thus avoiding air pockets.

2.      For the final preparation before planting at the end of February or the beginning of March it will be sufficient to weed mechanically several days before the planting-team arrives.

            II.      Planting

 1.      Once planting has been carried out, you must water the plants with 3 or 4 litres of water each, in order to expel the air at the foot of each plant and bed the fine soil around the roots. The plant is “watered-in”.

2.      Depending on subsequent rainfall its necessary 15 days after planting to give 3 to 4 litres of water to each plant. Continue watering every two weeks until the young plant has produced a shoot of ten to fifteen centimetres.

3.      Never water using a spraying machine or any container which has had herbicides in or  any product likely to burn the fibrous roots of the plant.

            III.      Care

 1.      Once planted you should hoe around the young vines and scuffle the soil as often as necessary, in order to eliminate all the weeds and to promote the growth of the young plant.

2.      Do not use weedkiller (as far as we know, no weedkiller has been recommended for use around young vines in their first year).

If you wish to use herbicide, please ensure that your distributeur recommends it in writing ( with climate change we have noticed, each year, more and more problems which are due to the use of herbicides).

             IV.      Treatment

 1.      It is a good idea to treat the young plants against all normal vine diseases: mildew, oidium etc....

2.      All plant treatments must be recommended for use on young plants.

Please ask for advice from your usual distributor.

               V.      Summer pruning

ü     At the end of August or beginning of September depending on the amount of growth on your young plants, you can shorten each young shoot to around 35 to 40 centimetres.

This will promote rooting, the consolidation of the graft and will avoid contamination by mildew through young growth trailing on the ground.

Following this apply two treatments of copper-based products in order to have a good bud set.
